Chairperson of Tsinghua University Council Chen Xu delivers a speech at McDonnell International Scholars Academy 6th International Symposium
On September 23rd, Chen Xu, Chairperson of University Council of Tsinghua was asked to attend the 6th McDonnell International Scholars Forum, where she delivered a speech entitled “Innovation in Chinese Universities: Challenge, Opportunity and Action”. More than 200 university presidents and representatives of teacher and student attended the forum, which was hosted by Washington University's Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton.
In her speech, Chen Xu made a brief introduction of the comprehensive reform under way at Tsinghua, centered on enhancing original innovative power, cultivating better innovative talents, and providing better service for the innovation-driven development strategy. Her speech was a manifestation of the strength of Tsinghua’s scientific research, its innovation capabilities and education reform. Chen made an appeal for wider and deeper cooperation between universities and colleges in the world, with an aim to bring forth the youth leaders for the future and make greater contribution for human civilization.
The McDonnell International Scholars Initiative was launched by Saint Louis University of Washington as a cultivation and exchange program of international scholars. The McDonnell International Scholars Academy was formally established in 2005, consisting of 31 world-renowned universities, including Tsinghua University, Tokyo University, National University of Singapore, The University of Melbourne and The University of Queensland. This year’s forum, co-sponsored by Saint Louis University of Washington and the University of Queensland, was held from Sep 22nd to 25th.
Before the speech, Chen met Glenys Beauchamp, Minister for the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science.
Chairperson of Tsinghua University Council Chen Xu visits University of Sydney, and signs an Dual Law Degree Pathway Agreement Between The School of Law, Tsinghua University, China and Sydney Law School The University of Sydney, Australia
From Sep 20th to 21st, Chairperson of Tsinghua University Council Chen Xu paid a visit to the University of Sydney, where she met and held a talk with the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sydney Michael Spence. An agreement was signed between the two universities in a double degree program in law, with an aim to promote scholarly communications and student exchange programs.
According to the agreement, a “3+2”joint training program will be officially launched by the law schools on both sides. Tsinghua University will choose students on a yearly basis to attend this joint training program, in which they are expected to complete three years of undergraduate study at Tsinghua University and a two-year J.D. program at the University of Sydney. Upon completion of the program, they will be awarded a LL.B. by Tsinghua University and a J.D. by the University of Sydney.
On Sep 20th, Chen attended a meeting with Sydney -Tsinghua Energy Alliance. After that, She and her entourage paid a visit to the sports center and Charles Perkins Center at the University of Sydney, a newly established medical institute specializing in the study of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Chairperson of Tsinghua University Council Chen Xu visits Zelanian Universities. Three Brothers Projects Yield Rich Fruits
From Sep 18th to 19th, Chairperson of Tsinghua University Council Chen Xu paid a visit to New Zealand. During her visit Chen held talks with the Minister of Tertiary Education of New Zealand and then the Vice-Chancellor of Auckland University.
On Sep 19th, Chen Xu met with Hon Steven Joyce, Minister of Tertiary Education of New Zealand, with an aim to deepen mutual understanding and strengthen multilateral cooperation. Chen’s meeting with Stuart McCutcheon, Vice-Chancellor of Auckland University, was centered on student exchanges, joint research programs and improvement of the management system of personnel.
The memorandum of Three Brothers Projects – a cooperative project between Tsinghua University, Qinghai University and Auckland University – was initially signed in May, 2007. And it was renewed in August, 2012. The Three Brothers Projects helped to promote exchange visits between the three universities and supported joint research programs covering plateau ecology, new materials, water conservancy, life science and conservation of resources.
