Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for Schwarzman College

A groundbreaking ceremony for Schwarzman College, a state-of-the-art residential college designed specifically for the "Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University" program, was held in Tsinghua on October 25.

Vice Minister of Education Hao Ping, Stephen A. Schwarzman, Chairman of U.S. investment and advisory firm Blackstone, Head of BP China Chen Liming, Zhang Xinsheng, Director of China Education Association for International Exchange, Chairman of China Resources Limited Wu Xiangdong, attended the ceremony. Tsinghua University President Chen Jining, University Council Chairman Hu Heping, Tsinghua Professor and Nobel Prize Winner C.N. Yang, and Professor Li Daokui, Dean of the "Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University" program attended the event.

The construction of Schwarzman College is planned to be complete in the spring of 2016. Admissions will open in the fall of 2015, with the first class of students in residence by the summer of 2016.

Targeting LEED Gold and China Green Building Label certification, the Schwarzman College will feature an auditorium, library, sunken garden, dining hall, fitness area, faculty apartments and a floor area of over 250.000 square feet. The organization of the building into two courtyards- one interior to the building and one opening onto the street-recalls both the traditional Oxford and Cambridge colleges and the courtyard houses of China.

The launching ceremony for the "Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University" program, jointly founded by Tsinghua University and Stephen A. Schwarzman, was held in the Great Hall of the People on April 21st, 2013.

Schwarzman Scholars offers studies for postgraduates selected from around the world to hone their international perspective and leadership qualities. Students will come from the U.S., Europe, South Korea, Japan, India and other areas of the globe.
