Cheng Jianping Appointed Deputy President of Tsinghua, Xue Qikun and Ji Junmin Appointed Vice Presidents

Professor Cheng Jianping has been appointed Deputy President of Tsinghua University, Professor Xie Weihe, Professor Yuan Si, Professor Qiu Yong, and Professor Jiang Shengyao all continue to serve as Tsinghua Vice Presidents. Professor Xue Qikun and Professor Ji Junmin have been appointed Vice Presidents of Tsinghua University as well, while Tsinghua Vice Presidents Kang Jejun and Zhang Fengchang will no longer serve as Vice Presidents, according to a decision made by the Ministry of Education, as reported by the Tsinghua News Center on May 23rd. 

Tsinghua Deputy President Cheng Jianping

Born in 1964, Cheng Jianping became a student of Tsinghua’s Department of Engineering Physics in 1981, he received his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua in 1986 and joined Tsinghua as a staff member later that same year. He went on to receive a Master’s degree from Tsinghua in 1991 and was a senior visiting scholar at the DESY national research center in Germany, from 1996 to 1998. He was then appointed Vice Dean of the Department of Engineering Physics at Tsinghua in 1998 and Dean of that department in 2003. In 2006, Professor Cheng was appointed Vice Chair of Tsinghua University Council and became Vice President in 2009.

Tsinghua Vice President Xue Qikun

Professor Xue Qikun was born in 1963. He began his studies as a student at Shandong University in 1980. He completed his doctoral studies at the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, from 1990 to 1994, where he spent part of the time in a joint program at the Institute for Materials Research of Tohoku University, from 1992 to 1994. He subsequently worked at the Institute for Materials Research of Tohoku University, from 1994 to 1999, during which he was also a visiting scholar in the Department of Physics at North Carolina State University, from 1996 to 1997. He became Dean of China’s State Key Laboratory for Surface Physics in 1999. In 2005, he joined Tsinghua University as a staff member and was later appointed Vice Dean of the Department of Physics, in 2006. In 2010, he was appointed Chair of the School of Sciences and Dean of the Department of Physics. In 2013, he was appointed Assistant to the President, Director of the Office of Scientific Research & Development, Chair of the School of Sciences, and Dean of the Department of Physics. Professor Xue is also a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Tsinghua Vice President Ji Junmin

Born in 1961, Ji Junmin became a student of Tsinghua’s Department of Thermal Engineering in 1979. He began his second bachelor's degree studies in the Department of Sociology in 1984 and joined Tsinghua University as a staff member in 1986. He was then appointed Vice Director of the Student Affairs Office in 1991 and became Director of the Student Affairs Office in 1997. In 1999, he was appointed Vice Director of General Affairs. He was appointed Director of General Affairs and Assistant to the President of Tsinghua University in 2013.
