Tsinghua Student Gives Invited Presentation at 2011 March Meeting of American Physical Society

Mr. Jing Wang, a Ph.D candidate from Tsinghua’s Department of Physics, gave an invited presentation on  “Optical effects of spin currents in semiconductors” at the 2011 March Meeting of the American Physical Society in Dallas from March 21 to 25.

The March Meeting of the American Physical Society is a top international academic conference, focusing on condensed matter physics. It is a great honor for researchers to give an invited talk at such a conference.

Mr. Jing Wang got his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University with the highest honor in 2005. Then, he started his graduate study under the supervision of Professor Bang-Fen Zhu in Tsinghua. In the past five years, he has made several progresses in such fields including spintronics and topological insulators and published five papers in high profile magazines such as Nature Physics and Physical Review Letters. He and his collaborators have predicted a new way to recognize currents of spinning electrons within a semiconductor – “Second-order nonlinear optical effects of spin currents”, which has been verified soon by experiment. Such discoveries can monitor spin-current in real time without altering the current itself and will greatly facilitate the research in this field.
