China’s Ministry of Education recently honored three Tsinghua University faculty members with the prestigious Renowned Teacher of the Nation Award. The winners of the award are Professor Qian Yi, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Professor Liu Guanzhong from the Academy of Arts and Design, and Professor Hua Chengying from the Department of Automation.  A total of ten Tsinghua teachers have won the award since its inception three years ago.

Professor QIAN Yi has devoted herself for decades to developing innovative and standard setting techniques for wastewater treatment in China. In recent years, she has focused especially on developing a sustainable development strategy and policies to promote and to support cleaner production and sustainable management of China’s water resources. She is the Vice Chair of the National People’s Congress of China’s Committee of Environment and Resources Protection and a member of the World Resources Institute’s board of directors.

Professor Liu Guanzhong is professor and Director of Ph.D in the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University. He is also Vice President of China Industrial Design Association and Director of the Academic Commission.

Professor Hua Chengying has been a member of the Tsinghua University faculty since she graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1970. She is now a professor in the Department of Automation. She is also a director of the National Elite Course “Fundamentals of Electronics” and director of the Electronics Laboratory. She leads the team teaching Fundamentals of Electronics and teaches such other courses as Fundamentals of Analog Electronics, Fundamentals of Digital Electronics, and Experiments in Electronics Technology. Her students from five schools and departments number over 10,000. She and her team carry out the 211 and 985 teaching and research projects of the People’s Republic of China’s Ministry of Education at of the and the teaching and research projects of Tsinghua University.
